Spanish 121, taught by Allegdy Carillo-Martin, is bringing culture to Everett Community College: this quarter, Carillo-Martin made her students write poems in Spanish.
The poems were not based on a certain topic so students have the freedom to choose what they want to write about. "The students wrote short concise sentences in Spanish making a Haiku," said Carillo-Martin. The
students used the vocabulary, grammar and descriptions they have learned throughout the quarter in writing these poems.
"This project was to help students put everything they learned this quarter together," said Carillo-Martin.
This is the first quarter Carillo-Martin has tried a poetry project. She says she likes to write and does so almost every day.
Student Lisa Olson wrote about her cat which gave her the inspiration behind her poem.
"Bonita y pequena gata, Te sientas en la ventana, Buscando un pajaro, Cuando descansaras? Cuando los pajaros vuelen lejos? Ahorra energia para otro dia."
This poem in English means "Beautiful and little cat, You sit by yourself at the window, Looking for a bird, When are you going to rest? When the birds fly away? Save your energy for another day."
Although unique, students don't find the poetry assignment any more difficult than other writing assignments according to Carillo-Martin, who showcases her students' paintings and poetry on campus walls.
"Learning another language is always difficult and I don't want to make this project to difficult for my students," said Carrillo-Martin.
Carillo-Martin has a passion for art. "I write and paint everyday," said Carrillo-Martin. She started writing poems in Spanish and has now started writing poems in English.
