The new gymnasium and fitness center was originally scheduled to be finished by September but delays have pushed back the completion date to the middle of December, just before the start of the 2011 winter quarter.

According to ASB Brent Thompson, the concrete foundation was scheduled to be poured in December, but the scheduled week was too cold to put the cement down and had to be delayed until the weather got warmer.

Now that the concrete has been poured, some areas have shown signs of "surface delamination," according to the construction company, which means parts of the foundation may have lost its mechanical toughness.

The construction company is currently running tests and attempting to "ground down and feather out" the delamination that "was more widespread than indicated and could continue to occur over time and with temperature changes," according to the minutes of the project meeting.

The discovery of clay in the soil, deeper than could be found by soil tests according to Thompson, needed to be removed before the foundation could be laid. Soil excavation costed EvCC around $6,000 but a more expensive treasure was still to be found further beneath the soil.

Demolition and overhaul of a water retention structure cost the college around $27,000. Turns out the site was once home to a car wash.

"They have resolved all those issues," Vice President of College Services Pat Sisneros said. "It's nothing extraordinary for a construction project, but we were on a pretty tight time frame to open up for fall quarter."

The postponement of the center's opening will likely hit the EvCC volleyball program the hardest. The original target completion date would have been right around the same time as the team's first games of the season.

Head Volleyball coach and co-athletic director Sue snow said the new fitness center was a big recruiting tool for her, a tool she is now unable to use to rebuild her team, which went 1-29 last fall.

Snow has had to resort to telling prospective players they will be able to play in the new center by the time they are sophomores.

"It's definitely a frustrating part of this delay that we are having a direct impact on the athletic programs," Sisneros said. "At the same time, we want to make sure at the end of the day that we have a quality building."

I was hoping the gym will be completed earlier, seeing how hard those men worked.
It's pretty disappointing to know that the completion will be delayed though. (Continued…)

Why do we even need a new fitness center/gym? We have a fitness center already that hardly anyone uses, and there are amazing programs that EvCC is trying to get off the ground. (Continued…)

The reason for the new fitness center/gym is not necessarily for the fitness center -- because we do have the rite aid building -- but to get the teams in the new gym and out of their random locations like they are now. (Continued…)
