When we hear about the terrible crimes comitted against women; rape, murder, molestation and gender oppressions, we may view the victims as statistics rather than individuals.
We may not be prepared to deal with the reality that we, too, can become victims if we are not prepared to defend ourselves. Students who want to learn how to react in dangerous situations are invited to attend the Girls Fight Back presentation on March 3, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Parks Multipurpose room. The seminar will teach students self-defense tactics and how to lead a safe and fearless life.
Girls Fight Back is a national organization that was established in 2001 in response to the murder of a college student named Shannon McNamara from Eastern Illinois University.
McNamara was in her apartment when her killer broke in. Evidence was found on the scene because McNamara had fought her assailant to break free.
Shannon's friend and sorority sister, Erin Weed, started the award-winning organization, which has grown to serve more than 100,000 people annually.
