Businesses are looking for innovative ways to go green and a new program at Everett Community College is providing students the opportunity to learn more effective techniques to do just that.

The program is named Sustainable Business Operations and Management. To earn the certificate, students must complete four required courses totaling 19 credits. "It only takes two quarters to complete this certificate," said instructor Miguel Hernandez.

Three of the four classes will be offered this spring. The classes are Business 184, Sustainable Business and the Carbon Footprint, Business 185, Lean and Green Operations and Business 186, Green Purchasing.

One of the most unique things about this program is a link between classes on campus. This program is linked with Spanish 121, taught by Alegdy Carillo-Martin. "We are doing a bilingual, illustrated dictionary on toxicity," said Hernandez. "We chose five industries and picked three common toxins per industry and the Spanish class is writing a brochure in Spanish on the topics."

Each quarter new classes are chosen to link with the business classes in this program. This quarter the class is Spanish, but next quarter it could be German or Japanese.

Hernandez has one main goal, to get more students to enroll.

Because students write grant and scholarship applications in this class, written and verbal English proficiency is essential. A bonus skill is to know how to do spreadsheets. "Knowing spreadsheets is not essential for joining this class, but knowing how makes it easier to not get lost," said Hernandez.
