Everett Community College plans to expand its Monroe program to include daytime courses.
College officials are currently planning a class schedule and negotiating a lease on a building that will serve as EvCC's Monroe satellite campus. Success at this location could lead to the development of campuses in other areas.
The college currently offers evening classes in Monroe, working around the schedules of public schools. College transfer classes are available at Monroe High School, while Adult education courses, such as English as a second language and high school equivalency certification programs, are available at Park Place Middle School.
Last summer, EvCC's Board of Trustees allocated over $300,000 of college funds to finance the expansion of the Monroe's satellite programs. A portion of these funds will be put towards leasing a separate facility to host the program.
"We plan to offer classes at our own facility by summer quarter." said Sheila Dunn, Director of East County Expansion.
College officials are negotiating a lease on a 5,000 sq. ft. facility in the West Monroe/Fryelands area.
The college will begin offering classes this spring at a temporary facility.
Sky Valley Education Center, a facility that offers cooperative homeschooling programs, will serve as EvCC's interim Monroe Campus.
As of now, plans for daytime courses include nutrition 101 and a fine art hybrid course. Officials are currently trying to incorporate primary courses, such as English, history and business, into the program, according to Dunn.
The satellite campus will give Eastern Campus students the opportunity to attend EvCC without making the commute to Everett.
Greg Netherton, 16, is a Monroe resident who attends class at EvCC daily.
"I take the bus, so it take me about an hour and a half to get to school." said Netherton.
The Monroe campus will allow students like Netherton to take EvCC courses closer to home. Still, student may have to make the commute to benefit from the programs and facilities of a larger campus.
