Despite the popularity of new electronic devices, our TVs aren't the only fixtures in our homes to receive gameplay.
Tabletop gaming has remained a prominent part of gaming world. A roleplaying game (RPG) is an interactive game in which a player simulates the role of a specific character.
Dungeons and Dragons is a fantasy RPG that was created in 1974. The game is widely recognized as the launch of the modern RPG and is still popular today.
"The game can weave an intricate story and is truly only limited to your imagination." said Cody Huff, Dungeon Master and captain of Tumwater High's D&D club.
In D&D, there are two primary roles-- that of the Dungeon Master and the adventurer. The function of the DM is to provide the adventurer with a specific quest and challenging obstacles, Huff explained. Each adventurer creates a distinct fantasy character. The player guides this character through a multitude of challenges, working together with fellow adventurers to confront the obstacles they face.
"A typical game consists of adventurers picking up, or starting a new quest and the DM providing gameplay." said Huff.
A trading card game (TCG) combines collectible cards with strategic games, allowing players to assemble distinctive decks which represent an arsenal of tactics to be used against an opponent.
The Pokémon TCG is based around the concept of a Pokémon battle. In the game, each player takes on the role of a competing trainer and uses cards which represent the individual Pokémon and their attacks. By aid of special energy and trainer cards, players can supplement the attack power of their Pokémon.
"Battling is only half of the experience. The rush, a high of high degree of opening a booster pack, me spending cash at Who's On First," said frequent player, Sean Webb.
Similar to other TCGs, the game consists of a complex battling system but can also be obtained as a collectable item, explained Webb.
"I like to do both, as competitive battling has become more intense since its original release back in the 'deep' nineties," said Webb.
Magic: The Gathering is a popular TCG in which a player assumes the role of a "planeswalker." The game is based around the imaginary concept of mana, the energy that stimulates all magic. In the game, five colors represent mana: white, blue, red, green, and black. Each of these colors summons an individual variation of magic. Players assemble decks which utilize the colors, different spells and creatures to defeat opponents.
