A concept design sketch of the plan for the Parks remodel, outside of the new cafeteria. "Study, Stop, Cafe" is simply a placeholder, and is not the final name.

A new cafeteria may be coming to the EvCC campus and the Parks building may be expanding, giving students more than 5,000 square feet of new space.

The Student Campus Enhancement Fund, approved by a popular vote of the student body in spring 2007, would raise fees in order to provide improvements to the campus. A renovation of the cafeteria was one of the planned improvements.

The ASB senate put together the student enhancement fund committee, which has seven student representatives on it, in order to manage and oversee the projects.

They have decided on a design concept for the cafeteria renovation. In the new designs an entirely new cafeteria will be built and will take up the corner of the Parks building closest to the Jackson building.

The next step to the project is to present the plans before the ASB executive council and then the entire senate. Sisneros plans to bring the design to the senate during one of their two May meetings.

"We feel like the current cafeteria space is broken," said Sisneros.

"The new cafeteria will provide better eating space and faster service."

The cafeteria will also serve as a central meeting space for students, not just an eating space, said Sisneros.

The current designs are also aesthetically pleasing because they allow a lot of natural light into the cafeteria.

Highline Community College's cafeteria is similar to the designs that the committee wants. Sisneros and three of the students on the committee took a trip down to Highline to see what the completed project would look like. The students from Highline were very complementary of the project, said Sisneros.

The original plan was to retrofit the old cafeteria, not to expand Parks and build a new one, said Sisneros.

However, a food design consultant was brought in and basically asked, "why are you guys looking to spend a million or more dollars to fix what is essentially a broken space?" The consultant suggested that instead of spending money on a poor space that the college should use the space outside of Parks and make a good cafeteria, according to Sisneros.
